Education Secretary Michael Gove announced a review of music education last week. The remit was included with the press release. He might find the 1991 HMI Report The Teaching and Learning of Music an interesting read. Or, as a believer in the more traditional methods of teaching he might want to delve further back – how about Suggestions for the consideration of teachers and others concerned in the work of public elementary schools published by the Board of Education in 1905?
We look forward as well as back and do, of course, stock the most up-to-date research too. Academic staff from the music department here at the Institute account for at least 62 books between them (this doesn’t include those to which they’ve contributed chapters – this would make the figure higher still). You can search the library catalogue by author, title or subject. Do ask for help from the Library Enquiry desk team if you need it – contact details are here.
