I was tickled to find this entry in Isabel Fry’s diary;
Ap 14. 41 <…> Henry Wilmslow left this p.m. I have sat pretty steadily for him & he has made a soft filmy drawing of a very peculiar, unpleasant looking woman. But as I extremely dislike my own face & hardly know it I daresay it’s quite good.
It reminded me of the story of Oliver Cromwell asking his portrait painter to paint him “warts and all”. Though having found a picture of Isabel in the archive, I’m not sure why she disliked her face so much as she looks quite normal to me!
